Dramatic Contrast Library
Confidently mixing inky hues and fine fabrics, designer Emily Taylor conjures a handsome space that is both stylish and cozy.
Q: Tell me about your vision for this space.
A: I wanted to create a timeless interior, one that transcends trends. I wanted to let all of the other materials work off of this rich, moody feeling that exudes from the walls, which is why I kick-started the project by restoring the walls to their original patina. They came out a bit darker than intended, but it was a happy accident as I think it adds more drama to the space.
Q: Did the color scheme naturally evolve from there?
A: I have always been drawn to blue and brown as they play so nicely off one another, and the room just spoke to me that it needed to house these hues. I strived to make the space cozy with soft fabrics and comfortable furniture surrounded by a plethora of books to inspire. I really just wanted to create a welcoming place to retreat to, especially in the evening.
Q: What else did you do to make this room look so collected?
A: The home is older, so that really set the tone for a more curated space. I made it current and fresh with a fun mix of newer transitional pieces set against the antique furnishings and traditional draperies. I felt the room should look updated, but at the same time timeless, so I chose a number of fine antiques that really pop paired against the modern ikat rug.
